Which exam for which goal?
- Undergraduate and postgraduate study abroad: IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic; many universities in the UK and Europe also accept Cambridge C1 Advanced.
- Immigration and visa applications: countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand usually ask for IELTS General Training or PTE; which exam is valid depends on the country and visa type.
- Work and career: international companies and professional bodies accept IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge results as proof of proficiency; Cambridge certificates never expire, which is an advantage here.
- Academic and public-sector applications in Türkiye: ÖSYM's foreign language equivalence table treats some international exams as YDS equivalents; always check the current table before applying.
The exams at a glance
- IELTS
- Bands 1–9; Academic and General Training; results valid for 2 years
- TOEFL iBT
- 1–6 band scale (since January 2026; the old 0–120 equivalent also appears on reports until 2028); four sections; valid for 2 years
- PTE Academic
- Score 10–90; fully computer-based; results valid for 2 years
- Cambridge
- Cambridge English Scale 80–230; certificate has no expiry date
IELTS tests listening, reading, writing and speaking; the speaking part is a face-to-face interview with an examiner. The exam takes about 2 hours 45 minutes and can be taken on paper or on computer.
TOEFL iBT is taken entirely on computer, with your spoken answers recorded, and focuses on academic English. It is especially popular with universities in the United States and Canada.
PTE Academic is computer-based with AI-assisted scoring, and results are usually released within a few days. It is accepted for both university and visa applications in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Cambridge exams (B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency) certify a specific CEFR level. Unlike the others, the certificate does not expire, which makes it ideal for anyone who wants permanent proof of proficiency.
