YKS Foreign Language Preparation
A planned programme for high-school students aiming at a university language department: preparation for the YKS Foreign Language Test (YDT) and for real-world English, together.
For students who have set their sights on one of the university language departments, we offer a planned programme that targets both the exam and general language use, taking them to their goal steadily. Our aim is not only to teach how to spot the right option, but to build solid English that serves on exam day and afterwards, at university.
Foreign language in the YKS: the YDT
The YKS (Higher Education Institutions Exam) is run by ÖSYM and consists of three sessions: TYT, AYT and the Foreign Language Test (YDT). The Language score used for admission to language departments is calculated from 40% of the TYT and 60% of the YDT, so although the YDT carries more weight, the TYT cannot be neglected. Our programme targets the foreign-language leg of this picture: the YDT and the language foundation it requires.

Our approach: the exam plus four skills
The goal of our carefully prepared professional programme is for students to grasp English as fully as possible and gain competence in every skill. By the end of the course we want you to reach that competence in speaking, writing, listening and reading alike. The YDT mainly measures reading, vocabulary and grammar; we work on those areas together with exam technique, but we do not leave speaking and listening out, because the aim is a student who passes the exam and then keeps moving at university without stumbling.
Why test technique alone is not enough
In language departments, classes are largely taught in the target language, and many universities greet new students with a preparatory year or an exemption exam. A student prepared only on answer patterns may pass the test and still struggle in the first year. That is why we plan exam-focused work alongside general language development.

How many questions does the YDT have, and how long is it?
80 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes. ÖSYM holds the exam once a year.
Which departments require the Language score?
Departments such as English Language Teaching, English Language and Literature, Translation and Interpreting, Linguistics, and American Culture and Literature admit students by Language score. Check ÖSYM's current placement guide for the full list.
If I take the YDT, do I still need the TYT?
Yes. The Language score is 40% TYT and 60% YDT; without sitting the TYT, no Language score is calculated.
Does the programme teach exam technique only?
No. While we work systematically on the exam question types, we also develop speaking, writing, listening and reading; the aim is English that keeps working after the exam.
When should preparation start?
It depends on the student's current level and the time left before the exam. Starting early makes it easier to spread the load over the year; contact us to discuss a plan that suits you.
